Petrochemical Applications

In the petroleum industry, the hydrocarbons from fossil fuels can have substantial variations in the distribution of the several hydrocarbon species. The relative abundance of these hydrocarbons determines several important properties of the resulting fuel, not the least of which is the octane rating of the fuel. In addition, water is an important contaminant in fossil fuels, and precise measurement of the residual moisture content of these fuels is a critical metric. Both the hydrocarbons and liquid water have significant absorption features in the 1650-2000nm range. Ubiquilight lasers emitting in this range can enable low cost, compact compositional analysis systems for these compounds.
